Can light rail transit stop urban sprawl and congestion? The councillors of Canada’s Waterloo region believe so. With the population of the region expected to increase 25% in the next 25 years, councillors call the proposed LRT plans their ‘preferred choice’, having ‘the benefit of attracting investment and creating intensification while at the same time removing some of the pressure on roads.’
With two thirds of the anticipated $90 million cost already sourced, construction is set to begin in 2012, introducing eleven new stations to the region.
