Despite being a more sustainable lighting option, low-energy bulbs have met with frequent criticism. One point which gets raised repeatedly is their poor aesthetic qualities, something Nicholas Roope – co-founder of the electronics company Hulger – decided to do something about.

It’s strange that the bulb, an object so synonymous with ideas, is almost entirely absent of imagination.

As the above video shows, Hulger’s bulb takes the traditional structure of a low energy bulb and subtly refines it, creating an object of beauty. The bulbs are so stylish that a lampshade seems not only pointless, but an insult to the bulb.
