Regular visitors to This Big City might have noticed a new logo on the site. This logo has been in use over on Twitter and Facebook for the last month, but a bit more time was needed to both perfect the design and functionality of the new header and handle the coding logistics that come with such a change.
The logo was chosen from over 100 entries on Crowdspring – a crowd-sourced design website – and took home the prize due to its simplicity and non-literal interpretation of urbanism. The name ‘This Big City’ was chosen partly as each word contained the letter ‘i’, so the fact that this logo played on that repetition made it a clear front runner. The squares, of course, represent an urban skyline. However, their modularity and suggestion of a message both dispersing or coming together also played a part in this logo being chosen.
The winning logo does an excellent job of capturing the style of content on This Big City. However, 100 entries is a lot, so I’m going to share some with you here.
This is just one of the many logos that introduced a city skyline to the mix.
Some were a bit more imaginative with the skyscraper-elements, but didn’t necessarily judge the tone of the website accurately.
The word ‘big’ was, unsurprisingly, enlarged in many of the entries. For a lot of the logos submitted, an overly literal approach was their downfall.
Despite featuring both a city skyline and an enlarged ‘big’, this one came a close second.
This was my favourite entry by a mile – the level of imagination on display here was unparalleled. Thankfully, logic prevailed. There was obviously no way this logo would fit in with the tone of This Big City, so it got passed on. But if we ever expand into children’s books…
You can check out every single entry here. Hope you approve of the design change, and keep coming back to check out ideas for our urban world on This Big City.
