The newest addition to London’s skyline is rapidly turning from a construction site to a tangible building. As the below photo – taken on a wet and windy day in London yesterday – shows, the building’s glass facade is currently being attached, resulting in the gradual reveal of its angled exterior.
At 72 floors and located south of the city’s river Thames, the Shard will tower over every building it surrounds, and even those in the more developed part of London north of the river.
As with most current building developments, the Shard is set to be a mixed-use space. The lower area of the building will house London Bridge train station and retail spaces, with the upper levels reserved for a mixture of residential and hotel space. One can also imagine the inevitable rooftop restaurant laying claim to the Shard’s peak.
On course for completion in 2011, London will soon have yet another ‘iconic’ building to add to its skyline.
