1.3 Billion Potential new Readers as This Big City Launches in Chinese

Wikipedia tells me there’s up to 1.8 billion English speakers, and 1.3 billion Chinese speakers. Despite this, until 46 days ago I had never even considered launching a Chinese language equivalent of This Big City. But 46 days after Taipei-based translator Leonard Chien planted the idea in my mind, This Big City in Chinese has gone live.

Launching with over 20% of This Big City’s content translated, all future posts from the English site will be published in Chinese, and the entire archive of the site will be translated over the coming months.

A simple ‘translate’ button could have been added to the English site, but to accurately translate content and modify the site to take into account cultural differences, we decided to create a Chinese-specific site. Content is published in Traditional Chinese as standard, with the option to translate all content in to Simplified Chinese.

Along with Leonard Chien I am thrilled to launch This Big City in Chinese today. If you have friends, family, or colleagues with a passion for urban innovations and an ability to read Chinese, please spread the word!

This Big City in Chinese is active on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr. Here is our RSS.
